Trichy Central Bus stand roads to be relayed

Trichy corporation proposes to redevelop the damaged interior roads of central bus terminus here under general funds within this month. Instead of doing patchwork, the engineering department will relay all the roads connecting bus bays with arterial roads around the bus stand. As public hygiene in the bus stand has come in for constant criticism, the corporation will open one new sanitary complex and urinals being constructed for public use in the next few weeks.

Mayor Mu Anbalagan on Saturday inspected the central bus stand which is soon to be relocated to the integrated bus terminus (IBT) work on which is progressing on Trichy-Madurai national highway. He said local people have demanded that roads within the bus stand be redeveloped. With many potholes on the stretch, pedestrians entering the bus terminus were feeling unsafe from the risky manoeuvres of buses trying to avoid the potholes.

Even after IBT is completed, since the central bus terminus will continue to function as a city bus terminus and plans are afoot to use the space as a high-rise tower for government offices, the civic body said that roads within the terminus spread over six acres must be redeveloped.

Temporary encroachments in the bus bays were also told to be removed, the mayor said.

Despite having two paid toilets and free urinals inside the terminus, open urination around the bus terminus is becoming a public nuisance, the mayor said.
