Widening the Ponmalaipatti main road to start soon

The state highways department has launched work to widen the Ponmalaipatti main road that branches off from Trichy-Pudukottai national highway to connect residential areas in Ponmalai and Ponmalaipatti, at a cost of 2.2 crore. At present, the road has varying widths between 5.8m and 6m. The highways department through the strengthening and widening work will standardize the width to either 7m or 10m depending upon the space availability.

TIMES OF INDIA: Around 1.2km long road from the site chosen for the permanent campus of Kendriya Vidyalaya on Ponmalaipatti road till the railway quarters will be widened. The first 0.6km of the road will be 10m wide, the remaining 0.6km will be 7m wide. The project is taken up under the chief minister road development plan. “We have requested Tangedco to relocate the poles from the carriageway of the road. Within 10 days, the widening and relaying works will be completed,” an official said. While the public has welcomed the plan to widen the road, concerns were raised about overspeeding as city buses would also access the road. “As a part of the widening work, the highways department to ensure the road users’ safety must install speed breakers near the Diesel colony and railway quarters. Vehicles while approaching the widened road  in the two points are prone to fatal accidents,” K C Neelamegam, a resident of Ponmalaipatti said.
