The first phase of the Mahakumbabhishekam of the famous Sri Jambukeswarar Akilandeswari Temple at Thiruvanaikkaval was held here on Sunday amid religious fervour. On Sunday, the consecration was held for all the 'Parivaara Murthis' (smaller shrines) of the sprawling temple in the morning.

Rituals connected with the Mahakumbabhishekam, which is taking place after a gap of 18 years, were conducted in the morning and holy water was thereafter brought in pots and poured on the 48 'Uba Sannidhis' and idols inside, said the temple authorities.

The holy event attracted devotees from various places who thronged the renowned Siva temple - one of the 'Panchabootha Sthalamals' representing water.

The kumbabhishekam of all the 'Parivaara Murthis was performed by priests amid chanting of mantras between 7 a.m. and 8.15 a.m. The event was held in the presence of Kanchi Sankaracharya Sri Vijayendra Saraswathi Swamigal. Ministers Vellamandi N. Natarajan and S. Valarmathi, officials of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department, donors and devotees witnessed the event.

The second phase of the Mahakumbabhishekam for Sri Akilandeswari and Sri Jambukeswarar shrines will be held on December 12 (Wednesday).
