Library on Wheels in Tiruchi soon

To provide better access to the needy readers and deliver books on their doorstep, Minister for Tourism Vellamandi N. Natarajan said that the Tiruchi Central Library would soon start a Library on Wheels.

Speaking at the valediction of National Library Week held here on Sunday, he said steps had been taken to acquire a mobile van for the initiative. A Non-Governmental Organisation had come forward to donate the van for the good cause. It would soon be materialised shortly.

A membership drive would begin soon to enroll members for Library on Wheels. Besides fictions and novels, it would carry books for school and college students in Tiruchi and neighbouring areas. Stressing the importance of reading Mr. Natarajan said that it would enhance knowledge. It could make a big difference in their life. Each and every person should read at least one book a week. Parents, teachers and school and college managements could introduce a system to dedicate time for reading books. Time had come for shunning the practice of spending valuable time on mobile phones.

Minister for Backward Classes and Minority Welfare S. Valarmathi said that around 1,0000 readers visited the Central Library every day. It circulated books to about 600 readers daily. It was a good sign. More and more people should visit library. Reading practice should be nurtured from tender age itself.

Collector K. Rajamani, District Library Officer, A.P. Sivakumar and Chief Educational Officer Ramakrishnan spoke. Earlier, the Ministers gave away prizes and certificates to the winners of various competitions organised as part of 51st National Library Week.
