Final placements at India’s leading engineering colleges other than the elite Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have got off to a robust start, despite a lack of big-ticket overseas offers. Both average and highest pay packages at campuses are up 10-15% from a year ago thanks to a surge in domestic offers, according to officials.

Campus hiring at most engineering colleges begins in late July or August while at the older IITs, it begins in December.

At BITS Pilani University, where placements at the three campuses in Pilani, Goa and Hyderabad started in early August, nearly 586 students were placed by the end of September, up from 546 a year ago. The highest offer this year for an IT role, made by cloud-computing software company Nutanix, is Rs 39.48 lakh, up nearly 13% from last year, while the average salary has gone up 10% to Rs 16.05 lakh.

At NIT Warangal, Uber has made the highest offer so far at Rs 36 lakh. At Delhi Technological University, the top package is Rs 39.12 lakh. At NIT Trichy, the highest cost to company or CTC package has jumped nearly 30% to Rs 36 lakh from last year’s Rs 28 lakh.

“Placements are very good compared to last year. Many companies are visiting for multiple profiles,” said RS Walia, training and placement head at Delhi Technological University.

Hiring is up 15%, said Walia, with companies including Amazon, Directi, PwC, L&T, Maruti Suzuki, Airtel and Samsung recruiting more this year. “We are also targeting a large number of first-timers for the 2017-18 session,” he said.

Placement teams at most of the campuses are reaching out to a larger number of recruiters – many of them first-timers – in an effort to hedge their bets.

“More companies are being invited because students are preferring varied profiles/roles to mitigate uncertain economic conditions. Increase in recruiter connect by placement staff through field visits, etc. also helps in getting a larger pool of companies,” said G Balasubramanian, chief placement officer, India and Dubai, at BITS Pilani University. Fifteen new companies have visited the university, he said.

Qualcomm (50), Oracle (48) and Microsoft (38) have picked the maximum number of students so far at BITS Pilani University, where more than 60% of the batch has been placed already.

Qualcomm is among the companies that have made the maximum number of offers at NIT Warangal as well, along with Amazon and Fidelity. The institute started placements in the last week of July, with Microsoft being the first company to visit.

“We are hoping for a good placement season. So far, software and electronics have been dominating,” said G Amba Prasada Rao, training and placement in-charge at NIT Warangal. Uber, ValueLabs, Technip and Exxon Mobil are the first-timers so far on campus. Mediatek has made an offer for a Thailand-based role.

At NIT Trichy, where more than 1,200 students are participating in the placement process this year, the average annual salary is hovering at around the Rs 8.5 lakh mark. IT product companies continue to be aggressive and Oracle, L&T, Qualcomm and Reliance Industries are among those making the maximum offers.

“We have had a dozen first-timers till now. The endeavour is always to enlarge the portfolio of companies to have more niche jobs,” said NIT Trichy’s AK Bakthavatsalam, head of the department of training and placement.

According to Bakthavatsalam, global cues were subdued last year and continue to be so this year as well due to visa issues and Brexit among other issues. “Overseas offers are fewer,” he said. RS Walia of DTU, however, said that international companies generally come to their campus for placements October onward.

Advanced Micro Devices recruits evenly from premier technology schools, local universities and private technology schools, said Kiranmai Pendyala, chief operating officer, HR. “We continue to see more than 50% of our new college graduates/interns joining from state universities and private technology schools in India,” she said.
