Image result for Uyyakondan canalThe Buoyed with the efficacy of barbed fences installed along a section of Uyyakondan canal's banks running through the city , the public works department (PWD) has planned to extend the measure to the entire stretch of canal in the city to safeguard the dying water body from being further polluted.
Meanwhile, the maintenance drive to clear off the aquatic weeds from the surface of centuries-old canal has been nearing completion.

The Uyyakondan canal departs from the course of Cauvery near Pettavaithalai, and from there, the 70km-long canal flows through Trichy city to benefit at least 33,000 acres of cultivable lands in Trichy and Thanjavur districts. Owing to residents letting out drainage and solid waste into it, aquatic weeds have invaded the fresh water canal. Besides preventing the flow of water, the weeds proliferate the breeding of mosquitoes .

The PWD has been preparing a proposal to fence the entire 5km to 5.5km stretch of the Uyyakondan canal passing through the city to prevent people from dumping their waste into it. "We have proposed to fence entire bank of Uyyakondan in the city limits with iron poles and barbed wires. The proposal is being prepared," the official added.
