With fever cases escalating each passing day and also more than 100 patients undergoing treatment at the government hospital with symptoms of fever, Trichy Corporation has planned to observe every Thursday as anti-dengue day to promote awareness among the residents in building resilience against dengue fever causing mosquitoes.
Starting from Thursday, the city corporation would distribute 'nilavembu kudineer' (herbal concoction) to school students as a special drive, part of anti-dengue day initiative. Corporation management has decided to conduct door-to-door source reduction drive to avoid the proliferation of dengue causing aedes mosquitoes and the source reduction activities would involve procedures for eliminating the safe havens of aedes mosquitoes including coconut shells and abandoned tyres where the rain water or even fresh water from other sources can accumulate to function as breeding place.
As many as 500 temporary domestic breeding checkers (DBC) are employed for the special drive in which all anganwadis, Amma canteens, bus stands and schools would be covered.

"People would be insisted to clean the water tanks in their houses periodically. Fogging would also be done twice every day. This would cover all the 65 wards simultaneously," an official with the corporation said. The civic body has also planned to distribute pamphlets to the public on Thursday on how to keep them away from fever.
Corporation sources said that if they find potential breeding grounds for dengue causing mosquitoes such as tyres, plastic enclosures and even empty flower pots accumulating fresh water, property owners would be slapped with a heavy penalty ranging under the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016.
