AI to operate flights to Sharjah, Kuwait from Tiruchi
AAI seeks resumption of flight to Mumbai Amid surge in demand for flights to major destinations in West Asia from here, the Tiruchi Airport authorities have made a strong pitch to the State-owned Air India to operate flights to Sharjah and Kuwait. The public sector carrier has also been urged to resume flight services to Mumbai from Tiruchi to improve domestic connectivity. In a communication to the Chairman and Managing Director, Air India, Tiruchi airport authorities have cited demand from travellers for flights to Mumbai and to certain other West Asian destinations. The airport authorities recalled the flight services that used to be operated by Air India in the Tiruchi - Abu Dhabi and Tiruchi – Mumbai sectors. The letter pointed out that the Indian Airlines had operated flights to Sharjah and Kuwait from Tiruchi earlier.
Despite tremendous potential on these sectors, flights to Sharjah, Kuwait and Abu Dhabi were withdrawn without giving any reasons. Air India withdrew service to Abu Dhabi and Mumbai in 2012, while flight services to Sharjah were stopped in 2009. The travel and trade industry sought restoration of direct Air India flight services to Mumbai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and Kuwait during the three-day visit of the Union Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju to Tiruchi a few months ago. At present, Dubai is the only West Asian city to have direct connectivity from Tiruchi and Air India operates the flight. A large chunk of workforce from Tiruchi and other districts are employed in various countries in West Asia. Now, passengers board from Chennai airport or go through Colombo taking the Sri Lankan Airlines from here, say airport sources.
