Move to merge Tiruverumbur with Corporation opposed

The move to merge the Tiruverumbur Town Panchayat with the Tiruchi Corporation has evoked a stiff resistance from elected representatives and all-party representatives from the area.

A day after an all-party meeting in Tiruverumbur to discuss the issue, a delegation met the Collector T.Soundiah on Thursday and submitted a petition urging the government to drop the proposal. Instead, they sought that the Tiruverumbur Town panchayat be upgraded either as a special grade town panchayat or a municipality to serve the residents better. Soma.Arangarajan, DMK Town Secretary, and K.Paneerselvam, Chairman, Tiruverumbur Town Panchayat, were among those who attended the all-party meeting.

Recently the Tiruverumbur Town Panchayat Council adopted a unanimous resolution opposing the move. The town panchayat would lose its identity if the merger was implemented, it said.

The move comes in the wake of the adoption of a resolution at the Tiruchi Corporation council approving the merger of the Tiruverumbur Town Panchayat, Pappakurichi, Ellakudi-Agaram and Keezha Kalkandarkottai village panchayats, all located in the eastern periphery of the city, with the Corporation.

The Tiruverumbur town panchayat has a population of 16,824 spread over an area of 4.16 square kilometers. Its annual income currently stands at Rs.108.80 lakhs.

Listing out reasons for their opposition, the resolution adopted at the Town Panchayat Council and the petition submitted to the Collector said Tiruverumbur was the headquarters of a taluk. The famous Thiruerumbeeswarar Temple was also located within its jurisdiction. For civic services, the people of the area could easily access the town panchayat . If the merger was to go through, people would be forced to go to the Ariyamangalam Zonal Office at Palakkarai in Tiruchi for getting building plan approvals, water connections and birth/death certificates. Besides, there were also widespread apprehensions that there would be a steep increase in taxes.

An elected representative of the Ellakudi-Agaram Panchayat also conceded that were apprehensions among people in his panchayat over the merger as they would have to shell out more money towards taxes. However, he felt that given the big geographical spread of the panchayat it was better that the local body was brought under the Corporation. “We could never provide basic amenities to all parts with the meagre funds allotted to a panchayat,” he observed.
