Uncertainty over IIM-T disappoints academics

Failure of stake-holders to give shape to the proposed Indian Institute of Management–Tiruchi (IIM-T) this academic year has caused disquiet in academic and industry circles.

When two other newly proposed IIMs at Rohtak and Ranchi have got off to a start under the mentorship of the IIM-Lucknow and IIM-Calcutta respectively, there was no reason why the IIM-T, for which the IIM-Bangalore is the mentoring institution, should remain grounded, a senior management professor in a reputed institution in Tiruchi said.

In the case of the new IIMs in Rohtak and Ranchi, the State Governments of Haryana and Jharkhand respectively lost no time in fulfilling the procedures of identifying and finalising the temporary campuses for starting the sessions of the first batch as mandated by the Ministry of Human Resource Development.

R.C. Bhargava, the Chairman of Maruti Suzuki India Limited, was appointed Chairman of the Board of Directors for the IIM-Ranchi while for IIM-Rohtak, the Vice-Chairman of Tata Motors Limited was appointed the Board Chairman. And the mentoring IIMs provided excellent support.

The question now is whether the Indian Institute of Management–Tiruchi would take shape at least next year. For, in the combined CAT (Combined Admission Test) notification for 2011, IIM-Tiruchi does not find a place.

As per the notification, admissions would be carried out to nine IIMs in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Calcutta, Lucknow, Indore, Kozhikode and Shillong, and the newly started ones in Rohtak and Ranchi.

All that is known about the IIM-Tiruchi now is that the location for the permanent campus has been finalised, but there is no indication as yet about the temporary campus, notwithstanding two visits made by teams led by senior MHRD officials.

According to knowledgeable sources, a senior professor in IIM-Calcutta has been identified for the post of Director in IIM-T.

However, the process has to begin with formation of a Society, and handing over of the land identified for permanent campus for creation of permanent infrastructure.
