Trade Center for Trichi Soon

A permanent trade centre to host exhibitions and other trade and industry related events would be established in Tiruchi soon, Transport Minister K. N. Nehru has said.

“We have received a request for establishing a trade centre, on the lines of those in Chennai and Coimbatore, in Tiruchi from the industry associations. Steps would be taken to establish such a centre and the basic infrastructure for it in the city with the approval of the Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi,” Mr. Nehru said inaugurating an Agri Expo organised by ‘Dinamalar’ on Thursday.

Mr. Nehru indicated that the trade centre would come up in an area of about 10 acres, possibly in the Tiruverambur region, the industrial belt of the city.

Emphasising the need for farmers to adopt scientific farm practices, the Minister said the System of Rice Intensification technique has proved that farmers could increase their yield substantially with less water and inputs. It was also inevitable for farmers to go in for mechanisation in view of the labour shortage. He suggested that farmers organise themselves into groups to go in for mechanisation of their farm operations. The State Government was supporting farmers to go in for mechanisation through various schemes.

Though agriculturists were facing many problems, the sector had a bright future as ensuring food security was vital. The Minister appealed to the Agriculture Department and the district administration to arrange for farmers visits to the expo. Members of self-help groups could also pick up useful insights on making food and agro-based products by visiting the expo, he said.

Collector T.Soundiah appealed to the farmers to learn latest cultivation technologies by visiting the expo in large numbers.

Rajkumar of Consortium of Indian Farmers’ Associations appealed to the State Government to extend the loan waiver scheme for sugarcane growers also.

R. Ramasubbu, Associate Editor, Dinamalar, Tiruchi, said the expo featured about 160 stalls displaying farm equipments, machinery, agricultural inputs and latest technologies.
