New boundary alignment for IIM-Tiruchi
TIRUCHI: Bharathidasan University has straightened the boundary alignments for the 200 acres that the State Government had secured from the former for the purpose of establishing the Indian Institute of Management – Tiruchi, it is learnt.
As per the new alignment for the newly proposed IIM campus that is sandwiched between the Bharathidasan University and Anna University, two survey numbers constitute the frontage. In the earlier layout prepared by the Higher Education Department, the frontage accounted for only one survey number.
A central team comprising officials of the Ministry of Human Resource Development narrowed down on the land in the campus of Bharathidasan University after inspecting two other sites at Panjapur and Sethurapatti during October 2008. Three years ago, Bharathidasan University provided 300 acres to the Anna University – Tiruchi, and is now left with about 500 acres after providing land for the IIM.
Of the seven new IIMs approved by the Union Cabinet last year, the one in Tiruchi has been listed along with the three IIMs: in Ranchi (Jharkand), Raipur (Chhattisgarh) and Rohtak (Haryana): that are to get functional from 2010-11 in the first phase. The IIMs in Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand and Rajasthan are to be set up subsequently.
The CAT (Common Admission Test) Committee was asked to include 560 additional seats (140 each in the four new IIMs) for 2010-11 admissions, it is learnt.
Official sources said creation of permanent infrastructure for the IIM in Tiruchi will take at least two years. Till then, the Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, Tiruchi, has accepted to provide classrooms and administrative buildings and the National Institute of Technology – Tiruchi is prepared to provide hostel accommodation, according to reliable sources.
