Anna University – Tiruchi to test new networking technology shortly

Anna University – Tiruchi (AU-T) will be the first in the country to test Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) technology of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL).

The university intends to utilise the technology on virtual private network platform for networking with its seven constituent colleges located hundreds of kilometres away, in a week.

Disclosing this on Tuesday, Vice-Chancellor V. Ramachandran said the new technology which provided for Wi-Fi connectivity in all campuses of the university would serve the purpose of facilitating transmission of e-learning materials from the main centre and reaching out to all units through video sessions, thereby helping in optimising teaching resources. The option of free two-way telephonic communication would also be exercised, utilising the dedicated optical fibre cable lines laid to the constituent units.

Self-financing affiliated colleges could also benefit from the technology and integrate themselves into the ‘Internet Cloud’ by conforming to the simple procedure of fulfilling formalities connected with furnishing the Internet Protocol number of their respective service providers. The new technology would be in place before Pongal, he said.

Dr. Ramachandran said the university had obtained government sanction for filling 50 non-teaching posts. The screening test for eligible candidates would be held on January 17, 2010. The syllabi had been posted on the university website. The website was upgraded at the start of the year.

Dr. Ramachandran, whose term ends in a month, expressed his overwhelming fulfilment over the untiring efforts of the university’s dedicated team to put the institution on a sound footing on very many fronts in the last three years.
