Golden Rock Workshop to build wagons capable of carrying 100 tonnes each

The Golden Rock Railway Workshop here has embarked on the task of developing prototypes of ‘bogie open type’ and low platform container wagons with higher carrying capacity.

Prototypes of ‘BOXN 25M’ (bogie open type) and ‘BLC 25 M’ (low platform container wagon) are being developed at the over 75-year-old workshop based on the designs provided by the Lucknow-based Research Designs and Standards Organisation, falling under the Ministry of Railways.

The Railway Board, New Delhi, has entrusted the workshop with the task of developing prototypes of ‘BOXN 25 M’ and ‘BLC 25 M’ wagons and conduct necessary testing before going in for mass production of such wagons with higher payload for future railway requirements.

The Golden Rock Workshop at Tiruchi is one among the four railway workshop across the country involved in wagon construction activity since 1962. The ‘BOXN 25 M’ and ‘BLC 25M’ prototypes will have an enhanced axle load of 25 tonnes thus enabling them to carry 100 tonnes each.

The under frame of ‘BOXN 25M’ prototype wagon is currently under process and its super structure will also be made of stainless steel. The under frame of ‘BLC 25M’ prototype container wagon has been completed and the bogie is awaited, workshop authorities told The Hindu. The authorities hope to develop the prototype of both wagons in a couple of months.

Upon completion, the prototypes would be subjected to load testing, overload testing and squeeze test. The prototypes would also be taken for speed trial and oscillation test to assess the track parameters, the official added.

Presently, the workshop is engaged in the manufacture of ‘BOXN HL’ (Bogie open type higher load) and BLC (container) wagons, each of which can carry 90 tonnes. The super structure and under frame of ‘BOXN HL’ wagons are completely made of stainless steel and the workshop has till now dispatched 38 such wagons for railway requirements.
Prestigious projects

The workshop has been supplying BLC (container) wagons for the Container Corporation of India Limited (CONCOR). Over 2,900 container wagons had been supplied by the workshop to the CONCOR till now, enabling the railways to earn over Rs.600 crore.

In addition to manufacturing wagons, the workshop has been carrying out Periodic Overhaul of diesel locomotives and steam engines besides exporting metre gauge locos to various third world countries after carrying out necessary modifications in them. It has also embarked on the task of manufacturing four new oil-fired steam locomotives for the Nilgiri Mountain Railway at a cost of Rs.40 crore.
