Villupuram-Tiruchi electrified section dedicated to nation

A special cover was released on the occasion of dedication of the electrified section of Villupuram-Tiruchi to the nation here on Saturday. The Postmaster General, Central Region, Tiruchi S.P. Rajalingam released the special cover and the first cover was received by the Union Minister of State for Railways E. Ahamed.

Dedicating the Villupuram-Tiruchi electrified section to the nation at a function organised at the Tiruchi railway junction, Mr. Ahamed said the railways was serving 18 lakh passengers a day with vast majority of users being economically backward.

Electrification of Villupuram-Tiruchi section was yet another milestone in Southern Railway, he said while complimenting the railway personnel in completing the work in two years time.

He announced a cash award Rs. 5 lakhs for the Central Organisation for Railway Electrification for carrying out the electrification project and Rs. One lakh to the Tiruchi Railway Division for lending its assistance in the electrification work.

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Member of Parliament N. Siva said several places did not have rail facility even today. He said there had been demands for operating train services from Tiruchi to Bangalore and from Tiruchi to Tirunelveli and back.

He said the Southern Railway General Manager and the Divisional Railway Manager, Tiruchi, could convene periodic meetings with people’s representatives to know about the local demands and ascertain their views and suggestions in this regard.

He suggested the establishment of a computerised passenger reservation system at Gandhi Market area for the benefit of all sections of the society.

Transport Minister K.N. Nehru urged for the widening the road over bridge near Tiruchi Junction. Member, Electrical, Railway Board Sudesh Kumar said electrification works had been receiving the highest attention in the Railway Ministry.

General Manager, Central Organisation for Railway Electrification, G.R. Vij, said electric traction was pollution free and efficient means of transportation. Over 18,000 route kilometres had been electrified across the Indian Railway network up to March 2009, he added.

Southern Railway General Manager Deepak Krishan said electrification of more sections under Southern Railway was under consideration and sanction in the near future. The Postmaster General, Central Region, Tiruchi, S.P. Rajalingam, said the Postal Department had brought out the special cover in recognition of the meritorious service of the railways.

The Divisional Railway Manager, Tiruchi S. Subramhanyan, MLAs Anbil Periyasamy and K.N. Sekaran and senior railway officials participated in the function.
