UGD extension work will be over by 2021

The phase-2 of the underground drainage scheme, meant for uncovered areas in 11 wards in the city, was progressing on course and would be completed by 2021, Corporation Commissioner N. Ravichandran said on Monday.

Mr. Ravichandran, accompanied by City Engineer S. Amuthavalli, inspected the progress of work on the project taken up at an estimate of ₹85.52 crore under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) of the Union government.

In a statement issued after inspecting the works on laying of underground pipes at Ammaiyappa Nagar and Annamalai Nagar in the city, Mr. Ravichandran instructed the officials to expedite the works and ensure that the roads, where trenches have been dug up, were restored for public use quickly.


The second phase of the project would extend the underground sewer system to uncovered areas such as Sanjeevi Nagar, AUT Colony in Woraiyur, Fathima Nagar, Vekkaliamman Nagar, Yours Colony, Cauvery Navar, Johnthoppu, Devadhanam, Ananda Avenue, North Tharanallur, Pitchai Nagar, Viswas Nagar, Mahalakshmi Nagar, Akilandeswari Nagar, Jeeva Nagar, Natharsha Pallivasal, Maris Avenue, Friends Enclave, Raja Colony, Ammaiyappa Nagar, Geetha Nagar, Annamalai Nagar, Jayam Nagar and Siva Nagar Extension spread over 11 wards of the Corporation.

Underground sewer lines would be laid for a length of 66.55 km and pumping mains for a length of 12.23 km under the project. The new sewer lines would have 2,827 manholes and 13 lifting stations. It would have a capacity to provide 10,722 house connections. Residents in these areas can pay the specified deposit with the Corporation to get the connections, Mr. Ravichandran added.
