Trichy: Three years after preliminary works on the four-lane road over bridge (RoB) near Periyar Nagar in Thiruvanaikoil were initiated by the state highways department, the RoB is now ready for inauguration. As the model code of conduct (MCC) for the general elections is in effect, officials said the bridge could be officially commissioned only after it was lifted. However, it will be available for public use and vehicular movement within a week.

The state government had in February 2011 given in-principle approval for establishing a four-lane RoB across the railway tracks in Periyar Nagar to tide over the narrow two-lane bridge that caused frequent traffic snarls for pilgrims heading to Srirangam. After a prolonged delay including the 2016 assembly election and monsoons, a major portion of the construction work at an estimated cost of Rs 47.30 crore was initiated in July 2016. The civil work reached near completion in June 2018.

Meanwhile, during the acquisition of land for the approach roads on either end of the bridge, namely Mambalasalai road end and Chennai trunk road end, individuals whose land was required approached the Madurai bench of Madras high court last year. They demanded compensation to be paid first before the acquisition and obtained a stay order which prolonged the completion. After the stay order was lifted a couple of months ago, state highways department completed a major portion of the approach roads.

“Two more bituminous (BT) layers will be laid on the approach road for 100 metres each on the two ends of the RoB. The task can be completed in the next few days,” an official source with highways department said. As the public works department (PWD) had already erected lamp posts on a major portion of the RoB, state highways department said that approach road will simultaneously be illuminated while laying fresh BT layers in the next three days. “We are yet to paint the pillars, bridge spans and retaining walls. Such minimal work can be completed without disrupting the vehicular flow. We are yet to take a call on the official inauguration of the RoB,” official sources added.
