Trichy: Continuing its efforts to provide green space and recreational facilities to city-dwellers in areas with space crunch, Trichy corporation has launched works for establishing a public park beneath Thennur flyover. Being set up at an estimated cost of Rs 43 lakh, the facility is aimed at making use of the vacant space under the flyover to provide walking track and other recreational amenities for the close-packed Madurai Road residents.

Officials said the initiative has been taken following the overwhelming response to the vertical garden-cum-public park established under the Palakkarai flyover at an estimated cost of Rs 32.50 lakh. With civil works having commenced under the Thennur flyover near Ramakrishna theatre, corporation officials said that a 500-foot-long walking track would be established with stone benches on either end. “Since the residential localities around the Thennur flyover including Marakkadai and Madurai Road falling under ward number 19 have less space for recreational activities, the upcoming park will benefit the local people a lot in the evening,” G Kumaresan, assistant executive engineer, Ariyamangalam zone, said.

A fountain and vertical garden are on cards in the upcoming public park which falls under Ariyamangalam zone, the officials added. The civic body said that the park is a part of Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) to improve liveability as well as green cover available in the congested zones. Apparently, such initiatives will also help Trichy corporation to improve its ranking in the pan-India cleanliness survey, Swachh Survekshan, scheduled for January.

As the vacant places were being misused by anti-social elements in the recent past for dumping waste and liquor bottles, residents in Thennur and nearby Kuppankulam have welcomed the move. “We also have a plan to develop a similar park under Gandhi Road flyover in Srirangam falling under ward number 3. Besides developing green spaces, works are simultaneously under way to beautify the walls of government buildings,” N Ravichandran, commissioner, Trichy corporation, said. The civic body has reached an understanding with the state-run Poompuhar handicrafts to paint the walls of corporation buildings with heritage-based themes. Painting works have commenced on the buildings on Madurai Road near the corporation’s lorry shed and government buildings on the other three zones would be beautified with exclusive themes in a month at an estimated cost of Rs 35 lakh.
