Trichy: After receiving frequent complaints about the encroachments hindering the movement of vehicles near Head Post Office (HPO) signal, state highways department on Saturday removed temporary encroachments along the Pudukkottai road crossing past HPO signal. Officials said that encroachments in front of as many as 120 shops along the Pudukkottai road near Kallukuzhi and TVS tollgate were removed in the presence of police personnel.

Official sources said that the state highways department, a week back, surveyed the length and width of Pudukkottai road being maintained by the department connecting HPO signal with TVS tollgate. During the survey, it was found that the boundary of Pudukkottai road was encroached by shops for the purpose of erecting shelters and to place advertisement hoardings.

Reportedly, department officials with heavy machinery on Saturday morning removed the encroachments on either side of the Pudukkottai road. Meanwhile, a section of traders started an altercation with the officials alleging that they were not alerted about the eviction drive earlier. “We gave them adequate time to remove the encroachments on their own. As they did not oblige, we had to remove in the presence of police,” an official with the department said.

Officials said that because of the encroachments, vehicles visiting the shops had to be parked on the roads, hampering the movement of traffic on Pudukkottai road including ambulances during peak hours. Department officials added that similar eviction drives would be carried out along Madurai road stretch between Marakkadai and Mainguard gate vicinity where traffic snarls are reported due to encroachments.

Meanwhile, Trichy Corporation officials also removed temporary encroachments in Thiruvanaikoil locality ahead of the consecration ceremony scheduled in Arulmigu Jambukeswarar temple in Thiruvanaikoil next week.
