NIT Trichy comes runner-up in Indo-Singapore joint hackathon
Trichy: National Institute of Technology (NIT), Trichy bagged second place in the Indo-Singapore joint Hackathon held in Singapore from November 13 to 15. Prime Minister Narendra Modi graced the occasion and gave away cash prizes to the participants.
‘Singapore -India Hackathon -2018: Solution for Humanity’ was organised by Nanyang Technological University and MHRD's Innovation Cell. It had 20 teams each from two countries, with university and college students selected nationwide to participate in the hackathon.
The team comprising Kartik Venkataran, Deep Bhattacharya and D Arutselvan from NIT Trichy, accompanied by faculty member Rajeswari Sridhar from computer science engineering department won the second prize. First place from India was secured by team from IIT-Kharagpur, who worked on indoor navigation.
NIT-Trichy bagged second prize worth $6,000 SGD for building an effective learning platform based on crowd sourcing that has expert recommendations with live chat.
It also had a neuro-linguistic processing engine to tag topics to summarize the concepts in the form of mind maps and recommendations of prerequisites/related topics with links to resources.
Mini Shaji Thomas, director, NIT, Trichy congratulated the team for their great efforts and for glorifying the name of the institute in the international front as NIT-Trichy was one of the only two NITs that was chosen to represent the Indian contingent.
A total of 120 participants took part in the 36-hour hackathon that began on Monday, where each team had three students and a dedicated mentor.
Problems were in the areas of mapping, synchronizing output of diverse social media and shared digital identity verification, effective number estimate, space management and allotment, effective learning and personal security.
Teams were chosen based on the programming skills and were selected based on a screening process by the MHRD after which they underwent a two-day orientation at IIT-Bombay before their departure to Singapore to equip themselves for the hackathon. Total five teams were selected to represent each country in the finale.
