The police are linking surveillance cameras installed at various places with the modern police control room here so as to bring the city under a centralised monitoring system.

Around 600 cameras installed at various places have been linked through Wi-Fi mode or cable with the modern police control room which is equipped with necessary paraphernalia for round-the-clock monitoring.

About 30 stretches are under constant monitoring at the control room following successful link with cameras.

These include Central and Chathram bus stand and their vicinity, Cantonment area, TVS Tollgate, entrance of the Mahatma Gandhi Government Hospital, Gandhi Market and its vicinity and the Collectorate area.

In addition, eight check posts established at the city’s border points have been brought under the control room. Cameras linked with the control room have been set up by the police, those by the sponsors and by residential associations.

The entire happenings at public spots are captured by the surveillance cameras and viewed at the control room.

Six video walls have been installed at the control room to monitor activities taking place in public places. The link of around 500 more cameras with the control room was under different stages of execution, says the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic) A. Myilvaganan.

Areas such as Ariyamangalam and Golden Rock would be brought under the monitoring system. The aim is to link over 2,000 cameras with the control room, he said.

Cameras act as a manpower multiplier and has emerged as a vital tool today for the investigators in ascertaining the identity of the culprits involved in property crimes and law and order offences as well as in management of rising vehicular movements, say police sources.
