The K.A.P. Viswanatham Government Medial College attached to the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital has established an exclusive 100-bedded disaster management ward.

It has come up in the fifth floor of the new block and fulfils requirements of the State disaster management policy. The ward has been equipped to offer emergency treatment to victims of disaster.

Although the coastline is far away from Tiruchi, the presence of a number of public and private industries and the international airport is said to have influenced the State government’s decision to set up a disaster management ward at the GH here.

G. Anitha, Dean, K.A.P. Viswanatham Government Medial College, told The Hindu that the exclusive ward would be of immense help in the event of a natural disaster or major accident. The beds would be kept on standby always and victims of fire accidents in factories and commercial establishments, tsunami, cloudburst, airline crash and others could be admitted.
