Tiruchi City Corporation has issued the work order to a private firm for executing the second package of phase-II of underground drainage project in the city. On completion, 43,147 more households will come under the UGD network.

All mandatory procedures and clearances have been followed in selection of the firm, Commissioner-cum-Special Officer, Tiruchi Corporation, N. Ravichandran told The Hindu .

The firm has been asked to mobilise men, material and machinery to begin construction works, he said.

The project — estimated to cost Rs. 344 crore — will be implemented under Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation. Out of the estimated cost, the contribution of the Centre, State and Tiruchi will be in 50:30:20 ratio.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to flag off the construction of UGD works in Tiruchi through video conference soon.

According to Mr. Ravichandran, the project will be implemented in three packages. The tender process of packages I and III has reached an advanced stage and it will be completed within a few weeks. Construction activities, which are part of the packages, are expected to begin within three months.

Sources say the phase-II project will cover five wards — 28, 29, 30, 61 and 62 — fully. Wards 7-9, 12-15, 21, 27, 31, 46, 52-54, 67-60 and 63-65 have been identified for partial coverage. Most of them are located in Ariyamangalam, Kattur and Tiruverumbur areas and were omitted during the first phase of UGD project.

As per the plan, pumping mains will be laid for 22 km and sewer lines for a distance of 319 km. The plant will be set up at Keezha Kalkandarkottai. The project is slated for completion in 2021.
