The inaugural plogging event hosted by the Trichy Corporation here to promote the role of the residents in keeping the streets free from litter garnered participation of around 20,000 people on Sunday. The participants, including the district collector, the commissioner of police and common people, collected 20 tonne of litter.

Plogging is a simple workout which can be tried by people on routine strolling or jogging. They have to carry cloth bags for collecting litter, mostly plastic waste, spotted on the roads. The collected litter can either be dumped in bins or handed over to sanitary workers during door-to-door waste collection.
The corporation reached out to the public through online platforms and residents welfare associations, inviting their participation in the inaugural plogging event. Around 20,000 people plogged through the streets, vacant lands and dry water bodies across the 65 wards on Sunday, on the occasion Earth Day (April 22).

“Online registrations alone ensured the participation of 10,000 people, including visitors reaching Trichy for spending weekend and summer vacation. Around 20 tonne of dry waste collected through plogging will be segregated at micro compost centres. Potential waste will be recycled,” corporation commissioner N Ravichandran told TOI.
The civic body is planning to involve corporation officials and workers in the plogging activity. It is insisting officials and workers to spend an hour every day to plog for a healthy lifestyle and to promote environmentalism among the public.
