National Institute of Technology - Tiruchi is putting together a strategic plan focussing on establishing interdisciplinary Centres of Excellence in emerging areas.

Towards this purpose, the institute will bring together its different departments, industries and other academic institutions.

The first such centre in 'Manufacturing' will be functional soon to catapult NIT Tiruchi to a major hub for research, innovation and training in Manufacturing systems, NIT-T Director Mini Shaji Thomas said in her Republic Day address.

“We will introduce multidisciplinary programmes and courses which will attract students from far and wide. We are in the process of signing MOUs with major industries and institutions for increasing our outreach and collaborations,” she said, adding: “We recently inaugurated the Office of the International relations for semester exchange and related activities with leading universities. We must also develop world-class the infrastructure, with international hostels, guest house and other facilities.”

The institution, she said, was embarking on a journey with the slogan: 'locally relevant, globally competent', to transform into an Institution of Eminence, and compete with the best institutions in the world.

During the course of transformation from Institution of National Importance to an Institution of eminence, the NIT-T will utilise its experts for empowering villages and industries in the surroundings by finding solutions to their problems.

The NIT-T has filed 25 patents in the last 10 months. Some of the patents will hopefully be commercialised for community use soon, she said.
