Overseas flights from the city could increase further as a team from Jetstar has proposed to visit Tiruchi soon to get a first-hand account of the traffic potential from here and the facilities.

The visit of the team from the Singapore-based overseas airline is to carry out a feasibility study and explore the possibility of operating service from here to Singapore. First, the team would visit Thiruvananthapuram airport during the end of this month with the same agenda.

The team has conveyed its itinerary to the Tiruchi airport officials who would put across to them the facilities available at the airport here besides movement of passenger traffic and international cargo.

Airport sources said that a joint meeting has been organised with the Jetstar team here. Top officials of the Airports Authority of India, senior members of the Confederation of Indian Industry, Chamber of Commerce and representatives from the Tiruchi Travel Federation would take part in meeting here on February 1.

Travel and trade industry members are expected to put across the potential of Tiruchi.

The team is expected to get to know the passenger traffic potential from Tiruchi. It is likely to visit the new passenger terminal building and ascertain the runway length and other facilities.

Even as a steady rise in overseas passenger traffic has been registered, there have been persistent demands for operation of flights to cover more West Asian destinations from Tiruchi as a sizeable number of those from the central and southern districts are employed at various cities in West Asia.
