Civic body embarks on road improvement in Tiruchi

A sum of ₹11.65 crore has been allotted for the plan
In a boost to the road infrastructure in the city, which were badly damaged during the recent rain, Tiruchi City Corporation (TCC) has started road improvement works.

This is the major road infrastructure improvement works since January 2015. A sum of ₹11.65 crore has been allotted for the road improvement plan, according to Corporation sources. In 2015, roads were developed at an estimate of ₹18.5 crore.

Improvement of many arterial roads, including Bharathidasan Road, Birds Road, Andar Street, Collector Office Road, Ronald’s Road, Jambukeswarar Nagar in Thiruvanaikoil, are among those selected for road improvement plan.

Several roads, which were damaged in the recent rain, and the roads where improvement works were taken up about five years ago, have been included in the plan.

Salai Road, one of the arterial stretches in the city, was the first road to be relaid in the current drive. It has also almost been relaid with paver machine. After completing it, the Corporation has now taken up improvement of Collector Office road, another important road in the city. Though this road was developed in 2015 too, it has once again been included in the improvement plan. Officials reasoned that the road had suffered damage due to frequent digging for carrying out underground drainage repair works.

A sum of ₹95 lakh has been alloted to lay roads on Vadakku Vasal, Amma Mandapam road and Vellala Street in Srirangam and the roads in Sakthi Nagar, Balaji Avenue, Karuna Nagar, Kannimarthoppu and Jambukeswarar Nagar in Thiruvanaikoil. Similarly, officials said a sum of ₹29 lakh will be spent for relaying roads on East Andar Street and Babu Road, and ₹15 lakh for old Law College and Venice roads.

As per the plan, Birds Road in Cantonment will be be widened and improved at a cost of ₹60 lakh, and ₹30 lakh has been earmarked for improving road infrastructure at Ramalinga Nagar in Woraiyur. Ukkirakaliamman Street in Anna Nagar will get facelift at an estimate of ₹20 lakh.

While welcoming the road improvement works, H. Ghouse Baig, secretary, Tamil Nadu Consumer Protection Council, Golden Rock branch, said proper attention should be paid on ensuring quality roads.

“There should not be any room for poor roads. Some roads appear to be sub-standard. The taxpayers money should not be allowed to go waste. The contractors must be made accountable for maintaining the roads if they suffered damage within the stipulated withstanding period of roads,” he added.
