The long-pending demand of entrepreneurs in the district, to establish a trade and convention centre to boost investment, is just a step away as Tamil Nadu Small Industries Development Corporation (Sidco) awaits the final permission to commence construction activities in the proposed site near Panjapur. Sidco sources said that the enter upon-permission is yet to be given by the district administration which would scrutinise the proposed site, post the final approval, it is said that construction activities would be taken up within three month time. Sources said that district administration may provide the enter upon-permission by December 2017.
Earlier in the budget speech of 2017-18, the state government had proposed a plan to set up trade facilitation centres in Madurai, Salem and Trichy cities. Subsequently, Trichy District Tiny and Small Scale Industries Association (TIDITSSIA) promoting small scale industries in the district suggested the district administration to sanction the 9.42 acres of government poromboke land available in Panjapur village close to the Trichy-Madurai highway.

As Sidco gave green signal for the proposed site in October this year, the official formalities such as getting nod from the district administration to utilise the proposed land has been expedited by Sidco. "The proposed land is yet to be handed over to us, but we believe there are no official constraints in handing over the same situated in Panjapur village. We have Rs 5 crore of funds ready with us and construction work would be taken up at the earliest," an official with Sidco said.
Official sources added that the government grants to establish the trade centre in Trichy was capped at Rs 5 crore, including the land cost of 9.42 acres, estimated to be at Rs 1.63 crore. The remaining sum has to be contributed by the associations of small scale industries in the district. The total project cost of the convention centre in Trichy has been estimated at Rs 11 crore.
Expressing optimism in beginning construction work in 2018 as the building plan, design, and layout were already chalked out, Sidco sources said that facilities would on par with Chennai Trade Centre, including auditorium that would be established in the proposed site.
It is said that about 5 acres out of 9.42 acres available land would be utilised for the trade centre related works, and the remaining area for landscaping works.
