Karur bypass to turn ‘smart road’
Though the encroachments eating away the Karur bypass road were cleared about a year ago, the delay in road expansion works by Trichy corporation has been causing frequent traffic snarls and congestion on the stretch. With residents growing impatient, the civic body has clarified that the bypass road stretch has been selected for development as a model smart road which would be replicated on select stretches of the city roads too.
Being a fast developing corridor, the absence of adequate arrangements to facilitate a hassle-free journey for the commuters has been frustrating for the residents. Almost 50 per cent of the 80-foot-wide Karur bypass road from K T theatre junction till ROB was encroached by commercial establishments on either side of the road connecting the arterial Thillai Nagar and Woraiyur localities with Chathiram bus stand. Finally, Trichy corporation cleared the encroachments in late 2016.
As residents anxiously await road expansion on the stretch, which include establishment of centre median with high-beam lights and storm water drains on either end, the delay by the civic body has enabled the encroachments to sprout again. Dotted with restaurants, automobile showrooms, theatres, hospitals, and retail outlets, Karur bypass road even houses an information technology major which employs more than 50 ITeS employees. However, the arterial road was not given the much-needed attention it deserved. "A downpour for five minutes would flood the entire stretch. With pot holes aplenty and a traffic signal it's a nightmare for any commuter to go through the Karur bypass road," G Vinyagamoorthy, a resident of Annamalai Nagar said.
Though the civic body promised centre median and extended road with high-beam lights, there was no improvement in developing the stretch and it continues to be in bad shape like any other road in the city. Trichy corporation meanwhile said that a proposal was being prepared to make the stretch the first smart road of the city. Emulating the smart road proposals in T Nagar, Chennai, and a few areas of Coimbatore, Trichy corporation sources said that a stretch of Karur bypass road will be a model road for the city, provided the smart road project was implemented on time.
"Through corporation funding, we have planned to make a stretch of Karur bypass road a smart road. Storm water drains and pedestrian pathway with greenery will be established as part of the proposal being prepared," S Amuthavalli, city engineer of the civic body said. To avoid digging up the road frequently, the corporation has planned to install underground duct system to enable cables pass through the road at ease.
Official sources added that the smart road project could be completed before March 2018 since the civic body's own fund will be utilised for renovating the most damaged stretch.
