A programme on 'energy management solutions in smart cities' was hosted by a group of stakeholders working for the development of the city, including Tiruchy District Tiny and Small Scale Industries Association, on Wednesday with about 30 stake-holders of MSMEs as participants. The Tiruchy Corporation, with 65 wards, had retained its position in the National level clean city ranking and been nominated to be the Smart City, along with 100 different cities in the country. During five years, the selected city will receive fundings from both Centre and State Governments.

The country has around 48 consultants who work for the Smart City development and to coordinate with the MSME sectors. Simon Thomas, Local Director and Strategic Consultant Lead, Chennai said that smart city is not just building Road over Bridge (RoB) or improving the infrastructure, but making everything digital for fast-er browsing of documents. "The works done by the Smart City projects are a time saving and with a click of the mouse, the required document will be displayed," he added. During a powerpoint presentation, Simon projected two video clips of Amsterdam and Barcelona to make the audience get an idea of how the finished Smart City project looks. The clip included a parking facility, free WiFi connectivity every-where, play area, and Non-Motorised Transport (NMT) for vehicle-free zone. When the same cannot be applied here in Tiruchy, two different images of now and future of Tiruchy portrayed pedestrian-friendly areas and parks.
