Many colleges should be shut down

If thousands of seats remain vacant every year, then Anna University and even the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) must share the blame for it. These two bodies have the authority to grant approval for various institutions. Do all accredited institutions fulfil the pre-conditions laid down in the books completely?

An official, who has been part of inspection teams in and around Chennai, says quite a few colleges in the districts of Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur should have been closed. “Some colleges have no faculty. In others, the managements post faculty for the period of inspection alone. There are also institutions that do not have laboratory facilities,” the official says. Though the inspection committee puts in a negative report, there is seldom any action against these colleges, the official laments.

Former Anna University vice-chancellor E. Balagurusamy has time and again maintained that the university should encourage the closure of colleges that did not perform well. On the other hand, there are those such as AICTE chairman Anil D. Sahasrabudhe and S. Kuppuswami, principal of Kongu Engineering College, who say poor performers will die a natural death.
