Management quota seats fast filling up

While boys prefer mechanical, electrical and electronics engineering courses, girls opt for computer science engineering

Even as general counselling for engineering admission is slated for June 1, self financing engineering colleges have begun the process of admitting students for management quota seats.

Besides government engineering colleges and institutes, there are about 25 private engineering colleges in Tiruchi district.

Although the trend of engineering admission would be known once the general counselling begins, private self-financing colleges are busy in filling 35% of management quota seats.

Though there was heavy demand for admissions in arts and science colleges this year, a section of academicians say that engineering degrees are not totally out of favour.

A sizeable number of students, accompanied by parents, still make a beeline to engineering colleges for admission. Engineering aspirants throng colleges that have good placement records, infrastructure and faculty members.

Almost similar to last year, mechanical engineering and electrical and electronics engineering courses continue to be the top priority of boys. Among girls, computer science engineering continues to be the first choice followed by electrical and communication engineering.

“Besides mechanical engineering, there is a good demand for electrical and electronics engineering. Core engineering branches are still the most sought after by students,” says S. Ravindran, secretary, Saranathan College of Engineering, Tiruchi.

He added that IT branches were the top picks among girls.

However, mechanical engineering and electronics and electrical engineering were the top picks among boys.

“We have received a good response to civil engineering branch too. It could be due to the good growth trajectory and a number of infrastructure projects, which are in pipeline in the future,” Mr. Ravindran said.

Sources in the engineering colleges said that some of the leading colleges that showed good placement record over the last few years had received more applications than the actual seats meant for management quota.

Out of 25 private engineering colleges in Tiruchi district, two to three colleges had filled up the management quota seats. Admission was fairly good in two other colleges. Others were working overtime to fill up management quota seats.

“Parents and students are clever in choosing colleges. Only the best performing colleges can sustain in the stiff competition,” says a principal of a leading engineering college in Tiruchi.
