The approach road leading to the Fort railway station has been lying unattended for more than two decades, causing great inconvenience to pedestrians as well as motorists. Due to the prevailing condition, vehicles crowd into one side, putting pedestrians at risk. Passengers have appealed the railway authorities to re-lay the road which is riddled with potholes and craters.
Hundreds of office-goers coming to the city regularly from Karur, Lalapettai and Kulithalai in Karur district regularly alight at Fort station to reach various destinations in the city. This apart, hundreds of passengers arrive at the station to board trains including Mayiladuthurai - Mysore express, Trichy - Krishnarajapuram special, Trichy - Erode passenger and Trichy - Karur passenger daily.
Since the road provides easy connectivity to Chathiram bus stand, Main Guard gate, Singarathope and Srirangam, almost all passengers from passenger trains alight here.

However, the road has remained unattended for years. During the rainy season, the road becomes slippery and there have been occasions when a motorists skidded and fell of their vehicles.
"A number of representations submitted for an immediate repair has fallen on deaf ears. We find it difficult to walk along the road. We have appealed to the railway authorities to re-lay the road and also provide proper lighting," said P Nandhini, a regular commuter from Lalapettai in Karur district.
"The poor condition of the approach road to the station is resented by commuters and motorists. Moreover, the parking lot is not adequate enough to meet the ever increasing vehicle population. All the two-wheelers are parked out in the open," said M Sekaran, president, Air, Rail, and Road Travellers Federation, Trichy.
However, railway authorities from engineering wing said since the station was not raking in much revenue to establish required amenities. As per the railway board norms, facilities would be established provided the station earns revenue as per norms, they added.
