Water scheme for five new wards to be ready by March 2018

The drinking water scheme for the five wards added to the Tiruchi Corporation in 2010-11 would be completed by March next year. The Corporation had decided to execute a new drinking water scheme for the five new wards – 61 to 65 – that were added to it following the merger of the Tiruverumbur town panchayat, and Pappakurichi, Ellakudi, Keezha Kalkandarkottai and Alathur panchayats, all in the eastern suburb of the city. Currently, the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board supplies about 5.20 million litres a day to these areas, the civic body decided to augment the supply to 135 litres per capita a day (LPCD) in line with the norms of Central Public Health and Environmental Engineering Organisation of the Ministry of Urban Development. Currently, residents in the wards are getting about 42 LPCD a day. The new scheme, with its source in Cauvery River, is currently under execution at an estimated cost of ?63.70 crore. M/s.WAPCOS Pvt Ltd., which was hired as consultant prepared the detailed project report. 

Work orders in three packages were issued in March last year. Construction of head works on the Cauvery river bed would cost ?12.17 crore. Eight new overhead tanks are to be constructed and additional water pumping mains are to be laid for a length of 25.70 km at a cost of ?18.43 crore. Distribution mains would be laid for 205.70 km., at an investment of ?14.09 crore. The new scheme would also have an advanced Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system, which will allow technicians to remotely monitor pumping and distribution of water.
