Corporation to relay roads around Central Bus Stand

Roads around Central Bus Stand will soon get a facelift as the city corporation has proposed to relay them under the special road programme (SRP) for the year 2015-16. Besides, 78 roads in 60 wards of the corporation will also be relaid under the programme.

A resolution was passed in the monthly council meeting seeking funds to the tune of Rs 26.21 crore from the Commissionerate of Municipal Administration (CMA) to carry out the work. There have been repeated requests from the general public to relay roads in and around the Central Bus Stand.

"With frequent movement of buses, roads had developed cracks, causing trouble to commuters," said Ramakrishnan, a commuter in the Central Bus Stand.

"Roads across the city are relaid in a phased manner. About 78 places in the 60 wards have been identified by the corporation where roads will be relaid," said S Nagesh, city engineer (in-charge) of the city corporation.

Road works are carried out in the city under various schemes and SRP is one among such schemes, he said. Funds to the tune of Rs 26 crore will be sought from the CMA for the work and rest of the cost incurred during the work would be borne by the city corporation, he added.

"Under this scheme, tar roads would be laid for 43.8 km distance apart from 9.63 km concrete road and storm water drainage in the road side for a distance of 13.91 km," Nagesh said.
