Trichy rail users demand new trains

Introduction of a new train between Trichy and Bangalore, a fast passenger between Thanjavur and Madurai, doubling of important sections and provision of purified drinking water facilities in railway stations were some of the demands that were put forth at the first meeting of the divisional railway users' consultative committee (DRUCC) of Trichy railway division on Monday. Railway officials assured to take up the members' demands with the higher officials.

As many as eight members who are part of various consumers, rail users and farmers' associations listed out their demands.

One of the members demanded the introduction of a new train between Trichy and Bangalore as it would benefit many passengers. At present, passengers from Trichy have to rely on the Mysore - Mayiladuthurai Express for their journey to Bangalore which provides only a limited quota for them. The members also wanted the railways to speed up doubling work on Thanjavur - Trichy and Villupuram - Trichy sections, which have been dragging on for a very long time.

As far as basic amenities were concerned, they pointed out the lack of purified drinking water facility in railway stations. They wanted the railways to create facilities for purified drinking water in Trichy Junction station from where a large number of trains are operated to various destinations in the state. Considering the omnipotence of cellphones, there was a demand to enable more charging points in all compartments especially in coaches reserved for the differently-abled.

Another major demand was the need to have the necessary infrastructure in place for the Mahamaham festival that is scheduled to be held in Kumbakonam in February 2016. With barely 14 months left for the festival that is held only once in 12 years, rail users are concerned about the poor facilities at Kumbakonam and nearby Papanasam railway stations. According to them, as many as 55 lakh devotees are expected to participate in the 10-days long festival.

Hence, rail connectivity should be improved on the stretch.

They also demanded the extension of the Trichy - Tirunelveli Intercity Express to Mayiladuthurai, which is currently operated with poor patronage. They said that if the train is extended it would benefit many people going to the Madurai bench of Madras high court for their litigations.

Earlier, divisional railway manager Manjula Rengarajan sought the cooperation of the DRUCC in providing additional facilities at stations and also educating the public on maintaining cleanliness at stations and railway premises.

She requested the committee to participate in Shramdaan, propagated under Prime Minister's Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, which would be carried out at stations and railway premises on the third Saturday of every month. She also stressed the need for creating awareness about cleanliness to public as well as children at a very young age.
