Led lights spell hope for Trichy

With majority of street lights not functional in Trichy, the city corporation is in process of switching over to light emitting diodes (LED) which consumes less power.

With several councillors in the meeting urging the corporation to find a solution to the problem of street lights, the corporation commissioner V P Thandapani has assured them that LED lights will resolve the issue.

According to a report submitted by a private consultant, the city has a total of about 34,000 electric poles and of them about 27,000 will be changed to the LED system.

The corporation has been incurring an annual expenditure of at least Rs 10 crore on street lighting and if the project is implemented, the corporation will be able to save Rs 3.20 crore in a year, the report has stated.

"The project to be implemented in phases is in its initial stages and a pilot study is being carried out in the city whereby the electrical consumption is being studied," said the commissioner.

He said since the project is gigantic and the entire city has to be covered, it would take at least 18 months for the contractor to complete the work. As the entire project is completely technology-driven, it is also a factor which is delaying it, say senior corporation officials. A single point that can control the entire 27,000 LED lights in the city will be installed very soon, they added.

Councillor RC Ganesan belonging to ward number 35 led the demand for resolving the problem of street lights.
