Quantum jump in new voters in Trichy final list

There has been a 14.5% increase in the number of eligible voters in the district between the period of draft roll release and the final roll that was released on Friday in the presence of the representatives of all the recognised political parties. There were a total of 19,44,477 voters in the draft roll that was released on October 1, 2013 and it went up to 20,33,188, a development that was appreciated by the state election commission, district collector Jayashree Muralidharan said.
Intense revision was conducted at colleges by deputy collectors and revenue divisional officers for a whole month and forms were distributed at the college premises during summary revision, the collector said. The youngsters were given the option of registering their names with the college address, or their residences. "It was a significant improvement in that out of 99,000 Form 6 (for inclusion of name in electoral roll) that were returned to us, 33,571 were in the age group of 18 to 19 years," she explained.

Speaking after releasing the electoral role for nine assembly constituencies, she said the young population was a problem area as they did not show much interest to register their names. However, the targeted drive for inclusion of the youngsters in the age group of 18-19 years saw a quantum jump from 36 to 50.8% in a month's drive. It was an intense drive but a summary one. But the 14% hike has given the administration to go for similar modus operandi starting with the national voter's day on January 26.
Moreover, in the areas where the sex ratio fell below 1,000 such as Thiruverumbur and Manapparai assembly segments, a special drive was conducted to include more women in the voter's list. As a result, in the final roll released on Friday, there were 1,25,607 females registered in Manapparai as against 1,25,038 and in the case of Thiruverumbur, there were 1,24,801 females as against 1,25,079 men.
