Wait for bus stand continues at Srirangam

It's just about 7.30 in the morning. A light drizzle is competing with sunlight to dominate what appears to be a fine day. But for Anandavalli (12), a class VII student, and her schoolmates, it is not a pleasant time at all. They are jostling for space at the small bus shed at Srirangam, which also functions as the bus stand of the temple town, as part of a large crowd.

Commuting by bus has been an ordeal for the residents of the temple town for a while now. Srirangam, chief minister Jayalalithaa's constituency, has been cynosure of all government departments, especially the transport, which recently introduced 23 new services from various corners of the state to the temple town. However, there is no proper bus stand yet though a proposal to build one was mooted soon after AIADMK gained office.

Residents TOI spoke to are in no mood to wait for the proposed integrated bus stand and want the traffic chaos resolved immediately. "The problem becomes acute during the weekends starting from Thursday night. Many buses, private and government, jostle for space. These buses compete among themselves with local buses that ply from Trichy. The government needs to find a solution to this problem immediately as many local residents are unable to move about freely during morning and evening hours," says M Thiruvengadam Yadav, an AIADMK functionary at Srirangam. Houses along the road are the worst affected. Many residents are unable to open their gates as buses are parked too close to the houses, adds Yadav.

It is estimated that at least 15,000 people commute from the stand on week days while the number is higher on weekends.

A senior official in the Trichy Corporation said the government has proposed to construct an exclusive bus stand at Srirangam and the preparatory work including the feasibility report has been completed. Land acquisition is going on and the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments department and the Slum Clearance Board have to part with land for the bus stand," the official said. He added that the corporation is awaiting a technical report from the National Institute of Technology before going in for construction of the bus stand. As for a temporary solution, the official said traffic police, transport and other departments need to discuss and arrive at a solution.

However, officials at NIT, Trichy told TOI that they are yet to get any communication from the corporation regarding the technical study. "We are yet to get any communication from the corporation. Generally a technical study involves a survey of the area chosen for the bus stand, assessment of the design and the number of passengers expected to use the facility," a senior faculty at NIT told TOI.
