3-member team to manage Bharathidasan University until new vice-chancellor is appointed

The administration of Bharathidasan University, Trichy, has been taken over by a three-member committee headed by the law secretary, which will discharge duties of the university's vice-chancellor until a new VC is appointed. The committee was announced at a special meeting of the university's syndicate.

S Subbiah and V Rajagopal, currently Syndicate members, are part of the new administering committee.

The committee had to be appointed since no efforts were taken to appoint a new VC. There was talk that the incumbent vice chancellor K Meena, whose term will end on July 15, did not start the process to identify the new VC three months ago as mandated by the university statutes. Academics have already expressed fear that delay in appointment would pave the way for irregularities in the appointment of a new VC.

The governor in his capacity as the chancellor is yet to appoint a convener for the search committee whereas both the syndicate and the senate have done their work. While the syndicate unanimously nominated Dr Prema, a retired professor of education from Alagappa University, the senate elected A Loganathan, managing trustee of Chidambaram College of Arts and Science for Women.

When the chancellor would announced his convener, the search committee will become full-fledged, which will then search and recommend three names to the government for the appointment of the 10th VC of BDU.
