Summer Beach at Cauvery Riverbed

Summer beach bustling with visitors in Tiruchi last year. File photo: M. SrinathThe river bank-turned-mini beach on the banks of Cauvery, which proved a big hit with the entertainment-starved residents of Tiruchi city and the surrounding areas during last summer, is back with a bang this year.
The summer beach will start functioning from April 20 and the officials inspected the river bank on Thursday.
The beach will be set up on the stretch of the bank at Ammamandapam in Srirangam. The corporation has already launched the work of levelling the bank by removing the bushes in an attempt to create a beach-like ambience, and also creating infrastructure facilities and lighting arrangements.
V. P. Thandapani, Corporation Commissioner, along with the top officials visited the site and inspected the ongoing works. He discussed the steps to be taken for providing protected drinking water and for cleaning the site every day.
The summer beach functioned last year from April 22 to June 3. Cultural programmes too entertained the people.
A special team comprising Shailesh Kumar Yadav, Commissioner of Police, Mr. Thandapani, Public Works Department executive engineers P. Balasubramanian (River Conservation Division), and P. Rabindhar (Buildings and Construction), inspected the site for creating adequate infrastructure facilities and to ensure safety and security for the people visiting the beach.
The summer beach will function from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. and cultural programmes will be conducted on weekends and government holidays.
The artistes who volunteer to conduct music and other cultural programmes on their own at the summer beach can contact the Public Relations Officer, Tiruchi Corporation, a press release of the District Collector Jayashree Muralidharan issued here on Thursday said.
