NCC training centre tobe ready by October

The NCC training centre on a sprawling area of five acres on the campus of the Bharathidasan University will be ready by October. The sanctioning of the land by the university has obviated the NCC Group Headquarters here to seek the assistance of educational institutions for organising training camps.

Featuring a slithering platform, the first of its kind for an NCC training camp centre in the State, it would also have other facilities, Colonel S. Ved Nayagam, Commander, NCC Group Headquarters, Tiruchi, said.

Many facilities

Talking toThe Hinduhere on Monday, he said that the training centre would have a firing range, obstacle course, platforms to erect tents and other basic paraphernalia including a stage and toilets. While the slithering platform would come up at an expenditure of Rs.4 lakh; Rs. 3.8 lakh would be spent for firing range; and Rs. 1.80 lakh for creating an obstacle course.

Colonel Ved Nayagam said that there was a strong case for filling up vacant posts of administrative staff at NCC offices.

He requested the State government to take steps to fill the vacancies. The NCC Directorate had been implementing several schemes, including sanctioning of scholarship under various schemes to students.

The regular administrative work needed to be executed by the junior assistants and office superintendents. “A good number of these posts have been lying vacant for the past few years, resulting in an additional workload for NCC officials,” he said explaining the steps being followed to manage the problem.

He also suggested that the State government should allocate certain reservation in the higher educational opportunities to promote NCC movement in the State. “Even a small percentage of reservation in the medical and engineering seats will go a long way in motivating the students towards NCC movement,” he said.
