MHRD team raises hope for IIM-T from next year

TIRUCHI: The third visit on Thursday by a team of the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) in the last one year to ratify temporary facilities for the Indian Institute of Management – Tiruchi (IIM-T) appears to have generated hope that the institution would get functional from 2011.

The team led by the Deputy Secretary (Management), Department of Higher Education, MHRD, Sharmila Mary Joseph, and consisting of Professor of Marketing, IIM-Calcutta, Prafulla Agnihotri, among others was reportedly satisfied with the facilities available with the Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, Tiruchi.

Official sources said the National Institute of Technology – Tiruchi would be sparing a hostel building for the IIM-T until the permanent campus is created on the 200 acre site sandwiched between the Bharathidasan University and Anna University of Technology – Tiruchi, along the Tiruchi-Pudukkottai Highway .

Collector Mahesan Kasirajan, who accompanied the MHRD team sounded certain that the outcome of the third visit would be fruitful.

Likewise, Prof. Prafulla, who is tipped to take over the Directorship of IIM-Tiruchi, indicated that the process for admitting students from the coming academic year has been put in place. “We are definitely making progress,” he said.

Informed sources said the inability of the district administration to provide the right backing to the earlier two visits of the MHRD teams had caused the delay in the start of IIM-T by a year.

The IIM-T was supposed to have been started in 2010 along with three other new IIMs at Raipur in Chattisgarh, Ranchi in Jharkhand, and Rohtak in Haryana.

However, only the last two IIMs could be started this year thanks to the enthusiasm evinced by the respective State governments.

The IIMs in Tiruchi and Raipur are expected to get functional in 2011 along with the ones proposed for the States of Uttarkhand and Rajasthan, it is learnt.
