Minister lays foundation for district central library

Construction of a new building for the District Central Library at Singarathope here is all set to take off.

The ‘bhoomi puja' was performed on Monday with the participation of the State Transport Minister K.N. Nehru, the District Collector T. Soundiah, Mayor S. Sujatha, and MLAs Anbil Periyasamy, K.N. Sekaran and Soundarapandian.

The construction work to be taken up by the Public Works Department at a cost of Rs. 3.74 crore has been planned for completion within 14 months. The new building will come up on the site measuring 0.71 acres opposite to the Poompuhar showroom along the West Bouleward Road in the city.

The ground floor will feature books for women and children; stack room; newspaper reading section; new arrivals, librarian's room and a cloak room, while the first floor will have reference section; air-conditioned browsing centre; IAS /IPS reference books; record room; office and an air-conditioned mini auditorium with a seating capacity of 200. The Superintending Engineer, Public Works Department, Tiruchi R. Thangaprakasam; District Library Officer, A.P. Sivakumar and other officials were present on the occasion. Mr. Sivakumar informed that the District Central Library had over one lakh books.
