Urban sanitation: unique distinction for Tiruchi

Tiruchi, the fourth largest city in the State, has been ranked sixth in the national rating of cities under the National Urban Sanitation Policy.

The rating was done on the basis of a survey on sanitation conducted by the Union Ministry of Urban Development.

The exercise covered all major cities in the country and about 72 per cent of the India's total urban population. Chandigarh tops the list in the country. The rankings were released by Union Minister for Urban Development Jaipal Reddy this week.

The rating for 2009-10 was based on indicators such as eradication of open-defecation and manual scavenging, access to toilets, safe collection, treatment and disposal of human excreta, wastewater, solid waste and storm water and recycle/reuse of treated wastewater, reduction of water borne diseases and environmental well-being, Corporation Commissioner T.T.Balsamy told The Hindu.

Tiruchi was the only city in Tamil Nadu to figure in the top 10 in the rating. The city had scored 59.020 marks out of 100. Chennai was ranked 13 and Alandur 20. Thanjavur (ranked 26), Neyveli (31), Tirunelveli (38), Pallavaram (39), Tambaram (40), Nagercoil (53), Erode (60), Tirupur (84), Tiruvannamalai (86), Coimbatore (92) and Madurai (99) were the other cities of the State to figure in the top 100.

Three agencies

The rating was carried out by three agencies, AC Nielsen-ORG Marg, Development and Research Services (DRS) and CEPT University. The process of data collection was carried out between December 2009 and March 2010 and was subsequently scrutinised in April by a team of experts.

The methodology for the exercise was designed incorporating standardized methods for measurement and scoring and was evolved after extensive stakeholder consultations. The rating makes use of both primary data collection during field visits and secondary data from published sources such as census.

The rating of cities was intended to create a baseline which can be used to measure progress in respect of sanitation in cities and to encourage cities to perform better.

Expressing happiness over the ratings, Mr.Balsamy attributed the good ranking of the city to sustained efforts made by the corporation and voluntary organisations. “Not stopping with this, we will intensify our efforts to make Tiruchi a fully sanitised city,” he said.
