Double-decker bridge planned near Railway Junction

The Projects Wing of the State Highways Department has started preliminary works for construction of two new road overbridges (ROB) across the Railway crossings near the Railway Junction and Thiruvanaikovil in the city.

Both the works had been included in the State Budget and the Department was now taking up the two works on a priority basis.

The projects wing was currently engaged in conducting field surveys, preparation of rough cost estimates and designs for the two ROBs, sources said.

The wing had already prepared a preliminary design for the Railway Junction ROB, which was inspected by the Highways Minister M. P. Saminathan during his visit to the city on Sunday.

A double-decker bridge with two levels had been proposed by the wing.

However, the final design of the bridge would be finalised in consultation with various government agencies as it would be a complex structure with carriageways in five directions.

The bridge had been a major traffic bottleneck and the City police had installed multiple signals to restrict the traffic to one way as the bridge was too narrow to accommodate two-way traffic.

The bridge, leading from the Aristo Hotel Traffic Island and the Railway Junction, runs across railway lines to connect Mannarpuram Road (leading to the Chennai Bypass Road) and the Madurai National Highway (NH 45).

It also leads to the Central Bus Stand and the Tiruchi-Dindigul Highway (NH 45).

As per the preliminary estimates, the bridge would entail an investment of about Rs.66 crore, excluding the portion of the cost to be borne by the Railways.

Sources indicated that things were moving fast and the project should at least reach the tender stage by the end of this financial year.

Two years

It would take a minimum of two years to construct the structure.

The Projects Wing was also working on preparing the estimates and design for widening the road over bridge across the Railway line near Periyar Nagar in Thiruvanaikovil.

According to preliminary estimates, the ROB would entail an investment of Rs. 54 crore.

Both the bridges would have six lanes, the sources said.

Meanwhile, work had begun on two of the five bridges sanctioned by the State government in Tiruchi district. Work had started on the ROBs at Oyamari Road and at Lalgudi.

This apart, two ROBs would come at Manapparai Town and another at Crawford in the outskirts of the City.
