UGC confers autonomy to National College

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has conferred autonomy on National College with effect from 2010-11.

The UGC decision communicated earlier this month follows the visit of an expert committee during December 2009 to assess the performance, academic attainments and infrastructural facilities to the college that mostly caters to the needs of the economically backward students. A new college committee has been constituted with Padma Vibhushan V. Krishnamurthy as the president and K. Raghunathan as Secretary. Dr. Krishnamurthy had earlier held vital positions as the Executive Director of BHEL, Tiruchi, Chairman of SAIL, Chairman of Maruti Udyog Ltd., Chairman of IIM, Ahmedabad and Bangalore. He is currently the Chairman of Indian Manufacturing Competitiveness Council. “With Dr. Krishnamurthy as the president and a committed band of teaching staff, the college is well on its way to garner greater achievements in future,” Principal K. Anbarasu said in a communication.

The college has drawn a vision plan for the next five years. The plan includes starting of new courses like MBA, MCA, MA (History), M.Sc. (Zoology). Job-oriented courses like Journalism and Mass Communication, and Diploma and Certificate courses suiting local industry needs were also on the anvil, Dr. Anbarasu said.
