Library to be ready in a year

Here is good news for the book-lovers and library-goers of the city. The new building for the District Central Library will be constructed in a year’s time. Priority is to be given for clearing of the tender for the construction of the library on an outlay of Rs. 3.74 crore.

The building of the library, one of the oldest in the State, which accounts for about 1.5 lakh titles, was demolished a couple of years, as its structure got weakened.

The new building, to come up on an area of 30,000 square feet, will have a ground and a first floor, each with a plinth area of 17,000 square feet. It will accommodate ‘dailies and periodicals’ section; Children’s wing; Women’s unit; Lending section; Internet unit; Study Centre for IAS and IPS and other competitive examinations and a Conference Hall.

The State Transport Minister, K. N. Nehru, speaking at a function to mark the 42nd All India Library Week celebrations here on Thursday, referred to the urgent need for the expeditious construction of the library. He promised that the State government would take action on a priority basis. The building would be readied within a year’s time. The Forests Minister, N. Selvaraj, spoke on the importance of the library movement.
