BSNL to introduce 3G services in Tiruchi by November end

IRUCHI: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) will launch its third generation mobile telephone services (3G) in Tiruchi telecom district by the end of November.

The BSNL is in the process of installing the equipment and erecting base tower stations (BTS) required for the roll out of the 3G services.

To start with, the service will be available in the district headquarters under the Tiruchi telecom district, including Tiruchi, Pudukottai, Perambalur, Ariyalur and Karur and gradually extended to other places.

The BSNL is adding about 270 mobile BTS in Tiruchi telecom district to augment its capacity.

All the stations will be commissioned by the end of this financial year, according to A. Balraj, Principal General Manager, BSNL, Tiruchi.
Tower erection work under way

Of these, 150 BTS, including 67 in Tiruchi, will be capable of providing 3G services. Work on erecting many of these towers were under way, said P. Natesan, Deputy General Manager (Planning), BSNL, Tiruchi.

The BSNL’s mobile service has a customer base of about 4.40 lakh in Tiruchi telecom district.

It has planned to add another 1.50 lakh customers during the financial year.

The public sector service provider is also planning to augment its Wireless in Local Loop (WLL) capacity by another 27,700 connections by putting up additional base stations.
44,000 working WLL connections

Currently, it has about 44,000 working WLL connections against its capacity of 48,000 in the telecom district.

Mr. Balraj conceded that there had been surrenders of WLL connections owing to certain problems but said that they had been overcome now.

Customers opting for mobile services and problems faced in payment of monthly bills in rural areas were among the reasons for the surrender.

The BSNL has now introduced a pre-paid system for WLL customers so that they need not travel to pay the bills regularly.
