UPS for 12 traffic signals in Tiruchi

TIRUCHI: Traffic signals in 12 out of 19 busy junctions in the city are set to be mounted on arches with power backup, direction boards and public address system shortly.

The first such new automatic signal with uninterrupted power supply (UPS) facility was inaugurated at Main Guard Gate by Transport Minister K.N. Nehru on Wednesday in the presence of Collector T. Soundiah, Police Commissioner Karuna Sagar, Mayor S. Sujatha, Corporation Commissioner T.T. Balsamy, City Union Bank Chairman S. Balasubramanian and other invitees.

The modernised signals would come up at Head Post Office, Kohinoor Theatre and Mutharayar Statue junctions with a three-hour power backup facility, the Commissioner of Police said.

The UPS would be installed in the police booth near the respective signals. The signals are expected to be commissioned before October.

In the second phase, traffic signals at Tiruvanaikoil, MGR Statue, Viralimalai Junction and Zonal Point would be modernised before November. The entire work is to be carried out with 100 per cent sponsorship.

With the UPS facility, the anxiety of the city police to regulate traffic at the time of power cuts had been removed. The existing signals would be used as pedestrian light controlled signals to bolster safety in school zones in the city, the Commissioner said.
